What Is Cannabis Rosin?

Rosin is a waxy substance rich in cannabis-derived chemicals such as CBD, THC, delta-8 THC, terpenes, etc. This highly viscous extract is a concentrate that forms via a solvent-free mechanism under high pressure. Cannabinoid content in the rosin is dependent on temperature and pressure applied in the manufacturing process. Rosin can have up to 80% THC concentration

How Is Rosin Manufactured?

Cannabis RosinThe process of preparing rosin involves the application of heat and pressure while processing the cannabis plant. Typically, trichomes are the targeted parts during the extraction of rosins. Trichomes are the bulging protrusions on the surface of cannabis flower. The trichomes produce the majority of the cannabinoid and terpenes.

The main idea behind the preparatory mechanism is that the manufacturers envelop the plant material between two sheets of parchment paper.

Then they use a hydraulic press equipped with a heating system to exert pressure on the parchment paper containing the cannabis plant. They filter out the trichomes at the end of the process, leaving pure concentrate.

This concentrate is now what we call cannabis rosin, which you can scrape off easily from the parchment paper.

The results may differ when making cannabis rosin. For example, the temperature influences the consistency of the rosin.

For example, completing the process under a higher temperature will make the rosin that comes out pastier. The opposite is the case if they use a lower temperature for the process. Typically, manufacturers would rather use a temperature range that is between 250 and 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can You Prepare Rosin at Home?

Apart from industrial production processes, making your rosin at home with common tools is quite easy. You need not worry about any accidents as the process is relatively safe. Here is a list of the things you need to make cannabis rosins in the comfort of your home:

  • Source material (cannabis flower)
  • Straightener (It is best to use one with programmable temperature, but a normal straightener with low, medium and high settings will do the job. Also, for better results, you will have to go for a cut-and-try approach to help you regulate the temperature as desired).
  • Dabber (tool to collect the rosin)
  • Collector (solid pan with a cover to keep the filtered rosin)

Some additional tools such as gloves or rosin bags are necessary, but you can use alternatives if you want.

Steps for Preparing Rosin:

Once you have gathered all the materials and tools, you are set to make your rosin in your home. Follow the following instructions step by step:

Extraction From The Flower

  • Press the flower bud gently in between your palms, or you can use your fingers. You can also use gentle pressure with a typical straightener.
  • Place the bud inside a rosin bag if you have one. If you do not have a rosin bag, jump on to the third step. It will be fine if you are using a hash or a dry sift. The recommended rosin bags are mesh bags and nylon food-grade screens.
  • Turn the straightener ON and adjust the temperature. In the beginning, keep the temperature low, gradually making your way up. Do not set a high temperature directly to avoid searing the plant you are working with.

Using Parchment Paper

  • Get the parchment paper and place your plant in it carefully. Be careful with the amount you place inside the paper. You do not want to stuff too much of the sample. It will be challenging for you to collect the rosin after completing the process. One other thing to take care of is leaving some space around the edges, so you don’t cause a spill while pressing.
  • Use the heated-up straightener to press the parchment paper with the sample inside for about 4 to 30 seconds. Stop the process once you hear a crackle.
  • Keep pressing paper with the straightener until you feel it is flattened because the flat paper will yield better results.
  • Check for the amount of oil in the paper. If there is excessive oil, replace the paper or find a tidy spot if you have some spare space.
  • Keep repeating the above steps until no more rosin comes out.
  • Grab the dabber to scrape off the rosin from the parchment paper.
  • Transfer the rosin to your collector for storage.

This easy DIY is for those who want to prepare rosin at home using the basic tools. If you want to go the extra mile to perform commercial rosin preparation, you might require specific equipment. It is called a rosin presser, and it is pretty expensive.

How to Consume Rosins?

Cannabis RosinThere is no specific method to consume rosins. Most people use it in the form of vapes or dabs. The other option is smoking in a glass bowl or a joint.

Rosin is one of the purest forms of cannabinoids. Hence, new users must start with a small dose to be safe.

Why Are Rosins Popular?

Rosins have undoubtedly gained much attention in a short time. They differ from typical concentrates because they are entirely solvent-free.

Firstly, rosins are relatively cheaper than other hemp concentrate products. Secondly, users can make them at home with no risk of causing an explosion.

Thirdly, they are pretty versatile and potent in terms of action. Hence, rosin is one of the best products for people suffering from different disorders or seeking pain relief because of its incredible effects users feel shortly after consuming them.

The bottom line is that cannabis rosins are highly demanded in the market these days. These products are rich in cannabinoids and terpenes, so they are widely used in the medicinal fields. One of the consumption methods is smoking. Talking about manufacturing, it is simple on both scales, i.e., industrial and small scale. You can prepare a personal stash in your home or in small laboratories. The process is safer as compared to every other concentration so far. Moreover, rosins require no solvents or harmful materials during the production process. Also, rosins are among the purest extracts of cannabinoids, and they are sure to be the best-selling products in the cannabinoid market within a few years.
